Why use an FPS member

because the fps registration system assures the highest standards

The Federation of Piling Specialists’ Registration System sets a rigorous benchmark that represents good practice to ensure that FPS Members maintain the highest standards of safety, technical ability and quality management.

All members and prospective members of the FPS must achieve a pass mark in each of the five sections of the independently audited Registration System and the process is repeated to encourage and measure continuous improvement.

1. Technical Ability

FPS members carry out piling and geotechnical work including rotary bored, displacement, CFA, mini piling, steel sheet piling, diaphragm and bored pile walls, ground improvement, anchors, soil nails, grouting, and jet-grouting. Their competence to deliver is measured.

2. Quality Management

The Audit goes beyond ISO 9001 and verifies that systems are in place and properly adhered to on site and in offices and workshops. Non-compliance reports must be properly dealt with and plant and equipment properly maintained.

3. Safety

Safety is a major consideration for FPS Members and one of the most rigorous categories in the Audit. Safety and Technical Ability have the highest pass marks. FPS Members do not compete on safety. Regular meetings of the FPS Safety Forum (attended by all Members) ensure that best practice information is shared and the collection of accident data allows detailed examination of the causes of accidents and provides a sector-specific benchmark.

Safety initiatives focus on identified hazards:

  • One Day Safety Awareness course
  • Site Supervisor Safety Training
  • CSCS and CPCS registration
  • Auger cleaners on CFA rigs
  • The application of lifting regulations to piling operations
  • The provision of safe working platforms for plant
  • Safety DVDs ‘Don’t go out on a limb’;‘Focus on piling safety’

The ‘Working Platform Certificate’ remains a major initiative of the FPS to reduce the incidence of rigs overturning due to failure of the site surface.

4. Environmental

FPS members have environmental policies and procedures covering all operations. Site operations in particular must comply with requirements for material handling, disposal of waste products, and plant emissions. Solutions can be offered to minimise the carbon footprint of the foundations and contribute to the sustainability of the project.

5. Training

FPS Members are fully committed to:

  • NVQ Level 2 Piling Operatives
  • NVQ Level 3 Piling Supervisors
  • Safety Training of Site Supervisors (PSSTS)
  • Certification for all Plant Operators
