Celebrating 60 Years of Excellence in Piling: FPS Marks a Milestone Anniversary

This year (2024), the Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) proudly celebrates its 60th anniversary. Established in 1964 by 13 pioneering piling contractors, the FPS has continuously strived to improve standards, safety, working conditions, and commercial practices within the industry. Our journey over the past six decades has been marked by significant achievements, influential leaders, and a steadfast commitment to advancing the geotechnical sector.

Since its inception, the FPS has seen 44 chairs from 27 different companies across the UK. Each chair has contributed to the Federation’s mission, fostering robust relationships and partnerships that drive innovation and excellence in piling.

Our influence spans wide and far. We have led the way in enhancing safety protocols through guidance, position papers, and standards. The FPS has been instrumental in providing hands-on training via apprenticeships, conferences, webinars, and more. Our committees ensure collaborative problem-solving, bringing together expertise from across the industry.

  • 1964: Formation of the FPS
  • 1967: First publication of FPS Facilities & Attendances
  • 1970: Launch of Piling Supervisors Training
  • 1975: Formation of the Safety and Training Committee
  • 1980: First CFA Piles Conference in the UK
  • 1988: Publication of the Specification for Piling & Embedded Retaining Walls
  • 1989: Release of the first Piling Safety Video
  • 1993: Launch of NVQ Level 2: Piling Operations
  • 1995: Introduction of the Piling CSCS Card
  • 2001: Launch of the FPS Audit Scheme
  • 2002: Introduction of the Working Platform Certificate
  • 2003: Launch of the Retention Resisting Policy
  • 2010: Publication of Piling Adjacent to Live Railways
  • 2012: FPS Training recognised by the Major Contractor Group
  • 2013: Launch of the EFFC Carbon Calculator
  • 2015: Launch of FPS Associate Membership
  • 2016: Launch of the FPS Awards
  • 2019: Launch of the FPS Early Careers Group
  • 2020: Formation of the Sustainability Working Group & First Webinar
  • 2024: Concrete Forum Conference at City Hall

These milestones highlight just some of our proudest achievements, including authorship of the original British Standards for Piling, creation of the Apprenticeship for Piling, and the introduction of numerous initiatives and policies that have set industry benchmarks.
