Masters Course in Geotechnical Engineering
For those who already have a degree in a related subject who wish to become geotechnical engineers, a number of universities offer post graduate masters programmes. These are covered by the Government’s higher education funding arrangements, so you should be eligible for student loans to cover course and living costs. Career Development
PSSTS (Piling Safety Supervisors Training Scheme) - on hold currently
This course is currently unavailable – if you wish to update your qualification, please take the SSSTS Course, currently widely available online.
You can register your interest for the PSSTS course by emailing fps@fps.org.uk, and we will contact you when the course becomes available again.
This two-day course is intended for junior engineers, supervisors, foremen and charge hands who are responsible for the safety of people and plant on piling sites.
It provides supervisors with an understanding of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues, as well as the legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities. It will highlight the requirement to promote health and safety to supervise effectively.
This course was accredited by the UKCG (now Build UK) as meeting their Members’ requirement that supervisors working on their sites can demonstrate that they have the necessary knowledge and skills to supervise their workers effectively.
Site Safety Plus 1 Day Course
This course is a piling specific one day course on site safety. It is a CITB Accredited Site Safety Plus course and therefore widely accepted within the industry as fulfilling the requirements for basic safety training.
The course is delivered by Cementation Skanska.

NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision
The FPS have commissioned the NVQ Company to run a workshop based course for piling site supervisors. The course will run over a twelve month period and will lead to an NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision. Candidates must attend all workshops and a final assessment interview and develop a portfolio of evidence to show they have met the required standards.
The course is intended as a thorough grounding for those wanting to take on site based managerial responsibilities. For many it is a first step into management.
