The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) Commercial Committee convened in Central London on 20th November 2024 with further attendees joining online. The session brought together industry leaders to discuss key developments, ongoing initiatives, and future actions critical to the sector. Below is an update on the key points discussed:
Guest Speaker: Becky Morris from Centricity Brokers
Becky Morris, Managing Director of Centricity Brokers, presented the company’s insurance offerings tailored to FPS members. These include Professional Indemnity (PI), Combined Liability, and bespoke solutions like piling guarantee extensions. She also introduced Centricity’s efficient warranty-checking service and highlighted potential membership opportunities with FPS. Discussions explored the feasibility of establishing an insurance broker membership category while ensuring fairness and long-term competitive premiums.
FPS Audit Update
The FPS audit process has been fully revised to align with updated standards, introducing benchmarks for areas like carbon reporting and digital maturity. With a goal to audit all members within 14 months, audits are scheduled to conclude by February 2026. The committee emphasised the importance of consistency and adherence to the new framework.
Digital Project Database
Progress continues on the development of a digital repository to enhance access to information on previous projects and pile reuse. A phased launch, focusing on essential data points such as project names, postcodes, and techniques, is targeted for Q2 2025. Publicity efforts will aim to ensure widespread awareness and engagement from members and stakeholders.
CLC Standard Appointment Terms
The committee discussed the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) stance on simplifying standard appointment terms. Excessive amendments to contracts have led to overly complex documents, creating significant challenges. The FPS will support the CLC’s efforts and plans to draft a position paper to amplify this critical industry issue.
Collateral Warranty Working Group
Significant progress has been made towards developing a standard FPS collateral warranty. The initiative, likened to the FPS Schedule of Attendances, aims to simplify and standardise warranties while addressing complexities and gaps. A position paper explaining the rationale behind the warranty will also be drafted to encourage adoption among members.
Build UK Common Assessment Standard
An update on Build UK’s Common Assessment Standard (CAS) revealed promising developments. Within six months, most main contractors are expected to adopt the CAS, streamlining accreditation processes and reducing the need for multiple certifications. FPS members are encouraged to align with this initiative to ensure industry-wide compliance and recognition.
Future Initiatives
The committee continues to explore new initiatives and topics, including:
- Strengthening data management practices for working platforms.
- Addressing issues around design ownership and protection in contractor bidding processes.
- Enhancing member benefits through collaborative solutions.
Looking Ahead
The FPS remains committed to driving innovation, collaboration, and standardisation within the piling industry. Key updates, including the progress of these initiatives, will be shared at upcoming meetings, ensuring members remain informed and engaged.
