FPS Commercial Committee Meeting (September 2024) – Key Updates and Progress

The FPS Commercial Committee convened on 10th September 2024, via Teams. Chaired by Stephen Edmondson and Tom Allen, representatives from key FPS member companies participated in discussions focused on commercial developments and initiatives across the sector.

Key Discussions and Actions:

Audit Schedule
The committee discussed the overdue FPS audits, delayed partly due to COVID-19. A revised schedule aligned with industry standards is being prepared to minimise duplication. A draft schedule will be circulated shortly to aid members in planning.

Transport Movement Orders
Challenges around transport movement orders were reviewed, particularly the delays caused by police escorts – which require advanced booking. While some areas present issues, the situation remains largely out of the control of members, despite lobbying efforts. Further evidence will be gathered to raise concerns through Build UK if necessary.

Digital Project Database
The development of a digital database was discussed to assist with pile re-use and future redevelopment of sites previously worked upon by members. It is intended to focus on simplicity and essential data like job details and technique.  The group agreed that automating the system is crucial, and the project should integrate with existing company systems. The database will aid future projects by tracking the site work of members  and providing insights for further developments.

Q2 Order Statistics 2024
Order statistics for Q2 2024 were reviewed, noting lower-than-expected housing numbers, due to planning delays and inflationary effects. The group highlighted that overall trends are more valuable than individual data spikes, particularly in relation to large projects like Sizewell C.

Guest Speaker – Client-Contractor Relationships
Maurice Bottiau, General manager of Franki Foundations, shared insights on the evolving relationships between clients and contractors within Europe , emphasising the need for better communication, risk-sharing, and more balanced contracts. He also discussed the increasing role of digitalisation and big data in improving industry efficiency.

Collateral Warranty Standardisation
A working group has been formed to draft a standardised collateral warranty template aimed at simplifying the process for FPS members. The template will be designed to cover essential requirements and be adaptable to varying client needs.

Why Use an FPS Member Document

The committee is reviewing marketing strategies to better highlight FPS’s unique qualities. A survey will be circulated to gather feedback on the target audience and key messaging.
