The latest quarterly committee meeting, held May 16, 2024, was held in a hybrid format and was chaired by Malcolm O’Sullivan. The issue discussed were:
Out-Going Chair’s View
John Chick, the outgoing Chair, reflected on the federation’s progress during his tenure. He highlighted key achievements, including the successful CPCS yellow card initiative for rig operators and significant strides in promoting sustainability within the industry. He noted the decline of Crosshole Sonic Logging in the UK market, attributing it to the federation’s efforts. Despite stepping down, John assured his continued involvement, particularly in ongoing projects like the concrete pumping/blockage initiative.
Research and Collaboration on Concrete Line Blockages
A significant focus of the meeting was the ongoing research project with Swansea University, investigating blockages in CFA rigs. The collaboration aims to understand and mitigate potentially fatal blockages.
Addressing Transport Movement Orders
The committee discussed the challenges posed by advance notice requirements for transport movement orders, particularly in northern regions. The inconsistencies in enforcement were highlighted, and proposals were made to include relevant clauses in tender documents to mitigate delays caused by external factors.
Updating CIRIA Chalk Guidance
Updating the 1979 guidance on Piling in Chalk was another agenda item. The FPS is supporting this project financially, the scope of the update remains under discussion, but the project has moved forward, with Arup being awarded the contract to author the new guidance.
Advancements in Carbon Reporting and Environmental Sustainability
FPS Vice-Chair, Stuart Norman, reported notable progress in carbon reporting. The FPS is developing a plug-in for the EFFC Carbon calculator, facilitating standardised carbon reporting among members. The commitment to report Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions was reaffirmed, with an emphasis on projects over £1m in turnover.
Committee Updates and Strategic Priorities
Updates from various committees highlighted ongoing projects and strategic priorities. The Executive Committee is focusing on enhancing communications and influencing clients and contractors. The Technical Committee is working on the Eurocode review and improving working platforms. The Safety, Plant & Operations Committee is updating safety standards and practices, while the Commercial Committee explores digitisation and cybersecurity.
