FPS Early Careers Group Visit Elephant & Castle Site in London

Members of the Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) Early Careers Group (ECG) were invited to a site visit at Multiplex’s Elephant and Castle Town Centre project on 6th September 2022, with deeper piling works now underway for the Integrated Ticket Hall in the London Underground Station.

After an initial introduction by Multiplex, appointed to deliver phase two of the works and the project, attendees, which included delegates from FPS members: Expanded; Bauer Technologies; Roger Bullivant; Keltbray; Cementation Skanska; J. Murphy & Sons and Piledesigns, were given a detailed site presentation by Expanded (piling contractor), which included the opportunity to discuss the challenges of installing piles in close proximity to LUL underground assets, the scope being delivered and the works sequence of the project.

Split into two groups, led by Andy Jones/David Major and Andrew Hewison/Hannah Hopper, the site walks focussed on both the CFA and rotary bored piling works. The group also were given guidance on the support fluid facility and the testing carried out to ensure the polymer meets the operational requirements.

Feedback from attendees highlighted that the day was informative, particular to those who had not seen support fluid piling previously, and highlighted the benefits of seeing real-world projects in real-time to aid their career development. Attendees asked questions to understand better the pre-construction phase and how risks were assessed.

Thank you to Multiplex and AJ Morrisroe for opening the site to attendees and to Expanded for hosting this event for the FPS Early Careers Group.
