New Working Group Formed to Look at Sustainability

Sustainability, the environment, and climate change are together the biggest issue we face outside the day-to-day challenges the construction industry throws up. Though moving rapidly in the right direction, the construction industry is not moving as fast as it could and is certainly not sustainable at present.

In fact, the UK construction sector is responsible for roughly 40% of carbon emissions, with the geotechnical sector accounting for some 13% of this figure.

For this reason, the Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) is looking to establish a new Sustainability Working Group, which will look at what the piling sector and wider construction industry can do to achieve that ultimate goal of Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050.

There are so many facets to the task, from water use reduction, carbon reduction targets and carbon emissions benchmarks through to sharing best practice and the promotion of a sustainability charter. There is no easy solution.
If you care about the environment, sustainability and how the piling and geotechnical sector can play its part, then we want to hear from you. Volunteers from each member company are invited to join the group and play their part in making a difference.

The plan is to meet monthly, with the Working Group chaired by Stuart Norman, and if you are interested in representing your organisation in the first instance contact Melissa at fps@fps.org.uk
